One of the best producers of Rhône style wines in Paso Robles is Tablas Creek, a winery founded by the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel from Châteauneuf du Pape. Traditional Rhône varietals were imported from the Perrins' estate including Mourvedre, Grenache, Syrah, and Counoise for reds, and Roussane, Viognier, Marsanne, and Grenache Blanc for whites. Tablas Creek follows the traditional Châteauneuf du Pape blending tradition, creating complex, balanced, and rich wines.
Robert Parker has said that "the Central Coast's Rhône Ranger cuvées are among the most exciting developments in the wine world. While the entire region is still a work in progress, it is remarkable how many world-class wines are already emerging." Wine Advocate, Jan 2007, 89 points: "I re-tasted a few of the 2004 reds, and the medium-bodied 2004 Cotes de Tablas (60% Grenache and 40% Syrah and Mourvedre) exhibits lovely peppery, berry fruit, roasted herb, and gamy scents. It is a top-notch example of a California version of a Cotes du Rhone."

The 2005, a blend of 42% Viognier, 33% Roussanne, 19% Marsanne, and the rest white Grenache, offers up aromas of honeyed grapefruit, orange rind, tropical fruits, and lemon zest along with a hint of crushed rocks. There are 3,500 cases of this beauty, which exhibits peppery, earthy, gamy, meaty characteristics intermixed with black cherry, cassis, and new saddle leather. Dense, rich, spicy, and exuberant, impressively made as well as well-balanced, it can be drunk over the next decade."
