Chateau Calon Segur was classified as a Third Growth in the original 1855 Bordeaux classification, but as Robert Parker has said, as "longtime Bordeaux aficionados know, this is one of the finest vineyards of Bordeaux, and is undeniably capable of first-growth quality." The chateau is known for producing excellent, traditionally-made wines but never at a very high price. For someone who wants to get value for their money, Calon Segur absolutely provides that.
Robert Parker has said of the 2002 vintage in Bordeaux that it "will find a place with shrewd consumers who drink wines rather than labels, and buy quality as opposed to vintage reputations." In other words, 2002 may not be regarded by most as a legendary vintage, but by making the correct purchase, great enjoyment can be had out of a wine from that year. Producers in the Medoc - Calon Segur being one of them - were especially successful with their wines in 2002 and make for the best values, so this is a great way to try a classified Bordeaux wine at a very reasonable price. Wine Spectator, Jun 2003, 92 - 94 points: "Fabulous aromas of crushed berries, with cassis and blueberries and hints of spice. Full-bodied and very rich, with a wonderful tannin structure. Long and exotic."
Stephen Tanzer, May 2003, 90-93 points: "(the blend is based on 60% cabernet sauvignon) Good saturated medium ruby. Very pure, ripe, floral aromas of black cherry, raspberry, cassis and spices. Juicy, spicy and layered, with strong but well-integrated acidity giving the wine lovely early balance and intensifying its flavors. Broadens out impressively on the back half without losing its shape. Highly promising."
Robert Parker, Jan 2005, 89 points: "Deep ruby/purple-tinged, this vintage, a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, is medium-bodied, elegantly-styled with surprisingly sweet tannin, some notes of herbs, plums, black cherries, and currants, a sweet, ripe attack, and a straightforward finish without the power and depth of the finest vintages. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2017."
