We offered this wine last month to extremely high demand and sold out of all our stock. Fortunately, we were recently greeted by another shipment of Root: 1 Cab, giving everyone who wasn't able to get their hands on this popular wine the first time around a second chance. Root: 1, 85% Cabernet and 15% Syrah and produced by Vina Ventisquero, is a hand crafted wine from the famous Apalta and El Suspiro vineyards in the Rapel Valley of Chile. Here, hot temperatures during the day, with windy, cold nights, the vineyards allow for full development of red fruit flavors and rich, ripe concentrations of the grapes. These ideal growing conditions have resulted in vines being treated with minimal pesticides, and the purity from the root to the grape culminates in a truly magnificent wine.

Fashioned by winemaker Felipe Tosso (previously at Concha y Toro), Root: 1 is made from ungrafted vines from historic 19th century Bordeaux cuttings. While phylloxera devastated most viticultural areas around the world, forcing vineyard owners to graft phylloxera-resistant American rootstock to their vines, Chile has remained unaffected. Surrounded by natural barriers to pests and disease, the Andes Mountains to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west, with the Atacama Desert to the north and frozen masses of Antarctic ice to the south, Chile exists as a virtual Eden.

For $8.99 and 90 points from the Wine Advocate, this wine makes for a great by-the-case purchase and is terrific for the summer, pairing perfectly with grilled meats. Enjoy!
