1995 Beychevelle Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $64.99
1989 Calon Segur Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $99.99
Wine Advocate, Jan 1998, 88 points: "This property has turned in a very good effort in 1989. It possesses a deep ruby/garnet color, a sweet, chewy, dense texture, full body, plenty of alcohol, and moderately high tannin. Quite precocious, it will have a life span of at least 15 years. It reminded me of a downsized version of the 1982, but slightly more rustic. Anticipated maturity: Now-2010. Last tasted, 8/97."
1995 Calon Segur Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $84.99
Wine Advocate, Feb 1998, 92 points: "As I have said many times since I first tasted this wine, the 1995 Calon-Segur is one of the great sleepers of the vintage (I bought the wine as a future for a mere $250 a case). The wine has closed down completely since bottling, but it is a sensational effort that may ultimately merit an even higher score. The wine is opaque purple-colored. With coaxing, the tight aromatics reveal some weedy cassis intertwined with truffles, chocolate, and beef blood-like aromas. On the palate, there is an element of sur-maturite (1995 was an extremely late harvest at Calon-Segur), fabulous density and purity, and a boatload of tannin. This deep, broodingly backward, classic Bordeaux will require a decade of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2035."
1998 Calon Segur Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $39.99
Wine Advocate, Apr 2001, 89 points: "Although austere tannin may keep this wine from obtaining an outstanding score, it exhibits plenty of complexity in its earthy, truffle, black cherry, currant, plum, and herb-scented bouquet as well as flavors. Moderately tannic, with good weight, it is a classically-styled 1998. Despite the fact that Calon-Segur tends to utilize about 35% Merlot in the final blend, it is not one of the more precocious efforts of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030."
1989 Cantemerle Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $84.99
Wine Advocate, Feb 1993, 91 points: "I believe the 1989 Cantemerle is this estate's finest wine since their monumental 1953. This ruby/purple wine has an explosive bouquet of crushed blackberry fruit and violets, an opulent, lush texture bolstered by good alcohol levels and soft tannins. Anticipated maturity: 1994-2010."
1996 Cantemerle Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $41.99
Wine Spectator, Jan 1999, 91 points: "The best Cantemerle in years, beautiful and rich, with a wonderful core of fruit. Pretty plum and berry aromas, with hints of tobacco and chocolate, lead to a full-bodied wine with loads of chocolate and berry character. Long, long aftertaste..."
1998 Cantemerle Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $27.99
1995 Carruades de Lafite Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $64.99
Wine Advocate, Jan 1998: "I have noticed in my tastings that the second wine of Lafite-Rothschild, Carruades de Lafite, has improved over recent years. The 1995 is a 40% Merlot/60% Cabernet Sauvignon blend. It exhibits more of the trademark characteristics of its bigger sibling. Elegant, with spicy new oak, lead pencil, and creamy black currant fruit, this is a medium-bodied, finesse-styled wine with excellent purity and overall equilibrium. It is much more accessible than the 1996, and should drink well between now and 2010."
1995 Du Tertre Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $39.99
1996 Ducru Beaucaillou Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $144.99
Wine Advocate, Apr 1999, 96 points: "I tasted the 1996 Ducru Beaucaillou on four separate occasions from bottle in January. The 1996 is long, with a deep mid-palate. It also reveals tannin in the finish. This wine is remarkable. It is muscular, concentrated, and classic. Bottled in late June, 1998, it exhibits a saturated ruby/purple color, as well as a knock-out nose of minerals, licorice, cassis, and an unmistakable lead pencil smell that I often associate with top vintages of Lafite-Rothschild. It is sweet and full-bodied, yet unbelievably rich with no sense of heaviness or flabbiness. The wine possesses high tannin, but it is extremely ripe, and the sweetness of the black currant, spice-tinged Cabernet Sauvignon fruit is pronounced. This profound, backward Ducru-Beaucaillou is a must purchase. It will be fascinating for readers who own the 1996 to follow the evolution of this exceptional vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2035."
1989 Duhart-Milon-Rothschild Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $87.99
Wine Spectator, May 1999, 90 points: "Aromas of blackberry, cherry and wood. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a ripe fruit aftertaste. Needs time to mellow and open. Big and rich for Duhart.--1989 Bordeaux horizontal. Best after 2001."
1995 Duhart-Milon-Rothschild Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $49.99
Wine Spectator, Jan 2007, 90 points: "Essence of blackberry and chocolate. Full-bodied and extremely velvety. Caressing and gorgeous to taste. Duhart started making excellent wines in this vintage.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective. Drink now."
2000 Duhart-Milon-Rothschild Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $49.99
Wine Advocate, Apr 2003, 90 points: "An outstanding Duhart, certainly one of the best produced at this estate since the 1996, 1986, and 1982, this blend of 80.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19.5% Merlot reveals a deep ruby/purple color as well as notes of lead pencil intermixed with wet stones, black currants, and a certain leafiness. Medium to full-bodied, ripe, and dense, but tightly-knit, with considerable tannin, it will require patience. For those willing to wait, it will be a sleeper of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2019."
1975 Fleur Petrus, La Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $274.99
Wine Advocate, Feb 1996, 90 points: "In this particular flight of 1975s, La Fleur-Petrus was overwhelmed by the competition. It is an outstanding, more restrained style of wine that is still a youthful, healthy dark ruby/purple color with slight amber at the edge. The nose is more restrained and less exuberant than in the other 1975s tasted. Sweet berry fruit is complemented by earth and new oak scents. Medium-bodied, stylish, and concentrated, with forceful tannin, and enough fruit, glycerin, and extract to support further aging, this youthful, delicious wine can be drunk over the next 10-15 years. The notes for this wine are taken from the description of Series I of the 1995 tasting conducted in Munich by Helga and Hardy Rodenstock."
1995 Grand-Puy-Lacoste Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $84.99
Wine Advocate, Feb 1998, 95 points: "Another unbelievably rich, multidimensional, broad-shouldered wine, with slightly more elegance and less weight than the powerhouse 1996, this gorgeously proportioned, medium to full-bodied, fabulously ripe, rich, cassis-scented and flavored Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a beauty...This classic Pauillac is a worthy rival to the other-worldly 1996..."
1998 Grand-Puy-Lacoste Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $44.99
Wine Advocate, Apr 2001, 90 points: "The 1998 reveals a classic creme de cassis-scented nose along with powerful, tight, firmly-structured flavors. While moderate tannin is present, there is more than enough extract and depth behind the tannin to support the enthusiastic rating..."
1989 Gruaud Larose Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $89.99
Wine Advocate, Feb 1997, 89 points: "In this blind tasting, the 1989 Gruaud-Larose was corked, but a bottle secured through a friend and tasted under non-blind circumstances was excellent, nearly outstanding. The herbal side of Gruaud-Larose was more noticeable in the 1989. The wine revealed a deep ruby/purple color (but not the opaqueness of the 1990), more obvious tannin, without the mid-palate and sweet inner-core of fruit exhibited by the 1990. It is a big, tannic, spicy wine, with plenty of potential, but not the sweetness and chewy texture of the 1990. The 1989 needs more time to shed its cloak of tannin; give it 5-8 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 20+ years."
1995 Lagrange St Julien Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $51.99
Wine Advocate, Jan 1998, 90 points: "The 1995 Lagrange is similar to the 1996, but the fruit is sweeter, the acidity lower, and the wine less marked by Cabernet Sauvignon. The color is a deep ruby/purple. The wine boasts a roasted herb, charcoal, black currant, mineral, and new oak-scented nose. Medium to full-bodied and ripe, with copious quantities of jammy black cherry and cassis flavors presented in a medium-bodied, low acid, moderately tannic style, this well-endowed, purely made wine requires cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2020."
Wine Spectator, Jan 2007, 91 points: "Licorice, blackberry and mineral undertones. Full-bodied, with silky and refined tannins. Long finish. Just about ready. Balanced and harmonious.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective. Best after 2007. JS"
1998 Lagrange St Julien Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $35.99
Wine Advocate, Jan 2001: "This dark ruby-colored, elegant, attractive effort offers spicy new oak, medium body, excellent concentration as well as depth, surprising softness, and early appeal. As with many Medocs, Lagrange's tannins are much friendlier since bottling. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2015."
1996 Larose-Trintaudon Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $16.99
1993 Latour, Chateau Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $239.99
Wine Advocate, Jan 1998, 90 points: "...a backward, cedar, black walnut, cassis, and earth-scented nose, medium to full body, gorgeously rich, concentrated fruit, moderately high tannin (but no astringency), and a sweet, long, powerful finish..."
1998 Leoville-Las Cases Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $99.99
Wine Advocate, Apr 2001, 93 points: "The 1998 has turned out to be one of the vintage's superb Medocs. It boasts an opaque black/purple color as well as a classic Leoville Las Cases display of lead pencil, gorgeously pure black raspberries and cherries, smoke, and graphite. A broad yet focused entry on the palate reveals firm tannin, medium to full body, superb concentration and purity, as well as a totally symmetrical mouthfeel..."
2000 Lynch Bages Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $129.99
Wine Advocate, Apr 2003, 95 points: "An utterly profound Lynch-Bages, this wine continues to remind me of a hypothetical blend of the 1990 and 1989. Interestingly, when I asked Jean-Michel Cazes to rank his top four vintages of Lynch-Bages, he ranked the 1989 first, followed by three vintages that he said were essentially equivalent in quality - 1990, 1996, and 2000. The 2000 Lynch-Bages exhibits a dense purple color, loads of glycerin and extract, big, muscular, sweet creme de cassis notes, with hints of new saddle leather, earth, and tobacco leaf. The 2000 is forceful yet plush, with a thick, juicy, succulent mid-palate, ripe tannin, and a long, layered finish. I know it will be tempting to pull corks on this wine in its youth, but it really will not hit its stride for 7-10 years and will last for at least 25. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025."
1989 Margaux, Chateau Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $399.99
Wine Spectator, Mar 1992, 99 points: "A great Bordeaux that needs only time to develop. Seductive, with a superb concentration of vanilla, spice, blackberry and cherry aromas and flavors. Has an iron backbone of tannins, but it still shows class and finesse. Seems to last forever on the palate. Best after 1999. 25,000 cases made. (JS)"
1986 Montrose Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $119.99
Wine Advocate, Jan 1998, 91 points: "This wine has turned out to be better than I originally thought. Made during a period when Montrose was flirting with a lighter style, the 1986 is one of the beefier efforts from that short-lived, stylistic detour. The wine reveals a dense ruby/purple color with only a hint of lightening at the edge. Fleshy, muscular, and powerful, with aromas of red and black fruits, earth, and spice, this medium to full-bodied, still tannic, brawny Montrose is not yet close to full maturity. It possesses a layered, chewy character, along with plenty of unresolved tannin in the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2025. Last tasted 10/97"
2000 Pavie-Macquin Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $89.99
Wine Advocate, Apr 2003, 95 points: "A wine of great density, concentration, and intensity, the opaque blue/purple 2000 Pavie Macquin needs considerable aeration, but with decanting the prodigious bouquet of graphite, camphor, blackberry, blueberry, mineral, coffee, and smoky oak finally makes an appearance. Persuasive, expansive, full-bodied, and muscular, this enormously endowed, rich wine looks set for a long life, at least three decades..."
1980 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $124.99
1996 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Bordeaux Blend 375ml - $79.99
Wine Advocate, Apr 1999, 96 points: "The 1996 Pichon-Lalande is just as awesome from bottle as it was from multiple cask tastings. For Pichon-Lalande, the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon is atypically high. This wine normally contains 35-50% Merlot in the blend, but the 1996 is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. Only 50% of the estate's production made it into the grand vin. The color is a saturated ruby/purple. The nose suggests sweet, nearly overripe Cabernet Sauvignon, with its blueberry/blackberry/cassis scents intermixed with high quality, subtle, toasty new oak. Deep and full-bodied, with fabulous concentration and a sweet, opulent texture, this wine was singing in full harmony when I tasted it in January. Given the wine's abnormally high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, I would suspect it will close down. It possesses plenty of tannin, but the wine's overwhelming fruit richness dominates its personality. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2025."
1995 Prieure-Lichine Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $39.99
Wine Spectator, Jan 2007, 89 points: "Toasty wood, with coffee and ripe fruit on the nose. Full-bodied, with lots of fruit and wood. Medium, chewy finish. Needs a little time to soften.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective. Best after 2007. 23,200 cases made."
FRANCE - CHAMPAGNE
1990 Moet Chandon Dom Perignon Champagne Blend 750ml - $224.99
Wine Advocate, Feb 1997, 96 points: "The profoundly rich 1990 Dom Perignon is a creamy-textured, full styled offering that loses none of its elegance in spite of its flavor authority...It seems obvious that the quality of the 1990 Champagne vintage is going to be remarkable, and the world-wide demand will be unprecedented. The message - buy them now!"
1998 Moet Chandon Dom Perignon Champagne Blend 750ml - $119.99
Wine Advocate, Dec 2005, 92 points: "A stronger vintage than expected, the 1998 Dom Perignon exhibits aromas and flavors of lemon oil, orange rind, and brioche in a medium-bodied, zesty, rich, moderately intense style. It is far superior to either the 1993 or 1992. Readers should remember that the 1971 Dom Perignon Rose is still drinking exquisitely. I recently had the 1969 and 1970 Dom Perignons (from magnum), and both were drinking brilliantly. It makes one realize just how long-lived these wines can be. Production is confidential, but there must be hundreds of thousands of cases of Dom Perignon since it available in most of the world's luxury hotels and restaurants."

1996 Ornellaia, Tenuta dell' Ornellaia Proprietary Blend 750ml - $114.99
Wine Spectator, Nov 1999, 94 points: "Ornellaia is superb this year. One of the best in years, with currant and blackberry and hints of mint. Full-bodied, with excellent tannin structure and a lovely, sweet berry aftertaste. Best after 2000. 13,750 cases made."

1994 Arrowood Merlot 750ml - $34.99
Wine Advocate, Jan 1996, 90 points: "The 1994 Merlot's saturated, inky black color is followed by a sweet, jammy nose of black fruits, licorice, vanilla, and smoke. Full-bodied, with a voluptuous palate, as well as a layered texture, this low acid, plump, fleshy Merlot should drink well for a decade after its release next year. Yummy! Everything Dick Arrowood and winemaker Michel Berthoud produce these days merits significant attention.Tel. (707) 938-5170; Fax (707) 938-5195"
1997 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml - $89.99

1993 Opus One Proprietary Red Wine Proprietary Blend 750ml - $199.99
Wine Spectator, Nov 2003, 92 points: "Tightly wound, with firm tannins. The core of meaty currant, anise, cedar and spice tasted awkward, but all the ingredients are there for greatness. I expect this wine may take longer than most Opuses to reach its peak.--Opus One vertical. Best from 2002 through 2010. 24,000 cases made."
1994 Opus One Proprietary Red Wine Proprietary Blend 750ml - $219.99
Wine Advocate, Dec 1997, 92 points: "...generous, complex nose of lead pencil, toasty oak, violets, and black currants. In the mouth, there is a beautiful texture, soft, generous, low acid, full-bodied richness, and a stunningly proportioned, rich, intense finish..."
1995 Opus One Proprietary Red Wine Proprietary Blend 750ml - $209.99

1996 Opus One Proprietary Red Wine Proprietary Blend 750ml - $199.99
Wine Spectator, Feb 2000, 96 points: "Wonderful finesse and complexity. Not the up-front opulent flavor of the '94 or '95, but seemingly deeper, with more finesse to the toasty clove, currant, black cherry and spice..."
1994 Shafer Vineyards Merlot 750ml - $69.99Wine Spectator, Oct 2000, 90 points: "Well oaked, with firm black cherry, herb, plum and anise flavors that are tightly focused, long and concentrated on the finish.--California Merlot retrospective."
