Dunn Vineyards - A California Legend

Dunn Vineyards - A California Legend

Since 1979, Dunn Vineyards has been producing wine with enormous aging potential, establishing them as one of Napa's premier blue-chip wineries. Dunn wines have consistently garnered high accolades from critics across the board. Their ability to age means that many of the older Dunn wines featured in this offer are perfect for drinking right now and the younger ones can still be cellared for years to come.

Robert Parker has said that "...for those with patience, these [Dunn wines] are among the finest values in long-lived, classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon," and "...all possess the following characteristics: (1) remarkable color and richness, (2) massive personalities with huge tannic structures, (3) gorgeous purity and unreal aging potential."

We are pleased to offer the following exciting collection of various Dunn Vineyards Cabernets. Enjoy!

Napa Valley

1985 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml - $99.99
Wine Spectator, Jan 1988, 94 points: "Intense and concentrated, packed with ripe cassis, cherry and currant flavors that are rich and elegant. The acidity and tannins are crisp and juicy, offering great potential for the cellar. A real mouthful of Cabernet."

1986 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml - $89.99
Wine Advocate, Aug 1996, 92 points: "Two of the most impressive wines in these tastings, both of Dunn's 1986s tasted like 3-4-year old Cabernets rather than 10-year old adolescents. The 1986 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is still tight, but it reveals more openness, and gobs of sweet, mineral-laden, black-raspberry, and cassis fruit. The fruit dominates the wine's structure, a positive sign given all the wine's tannin and body. Rich, pure, and youthful, this 1986 is accessible now, but will unquestionably last another 20+ years. It is a profound, well-balanced Cabernet with well-integrated acidity and tannin. The tasting notes for this section are from two single blind tastings, one conducted in May, 1996, in California, and the other in June, 1996, in Baltimore."

1987 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml - $94.99
Wine Spectator, Nov 1990, 93 points: "Attractive for its deep, rich fruit and spicy aromas, this is very young, intense and complex, with tiers of currant, plum and black cherry flavors and toasty oak notes. Stylish, very complete and firmly tannic on the finish, but it should reward cellaring until 1997 to 2001. 2,300 cases made."

1988 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml - $64.99
Wine Spectator, Nov 1991, 87 points: "An austere style, with a touch of mint and spice, but has plenty of black cherry, currant, plum and cedar flavors. The tannins are substantial and it could use a little more body in the middle. Cellar until 1996. 2,100 cases made."

1989 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml - $64.99
Wine Spectator, Apr 1993, 90 points: "Thick, dark, dense and concentrated, this packs a wallop with intensely flavored, firmly tannic currant, earth and cedar notes. So young it tastes like a barrel sample, but it fits the Dunn Napa Valley style and is a success. Cellar. Best after 1997. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 2,500 cases made."

1995 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon 1500ml - $174.99
Wine Advocate, Dec 1998, 94 points: "The saturated black/purple-colored 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon possesses a promising yet backward nose of minerals, lead pencil, and blackberries/cassis. The wine was bottled in June, but it is showing no ill effects. This mammoth offering displays extraordinary concentration and purity, as well as a thick, unctuous texture with high tannin levels. It will evolve for 30-50 years. When will it reach its plateau of maturity? My best guess is 10-15 years ... minimum."

1996 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml - $79.99
Wine Advocate, Jan 2000, 94 points: "The opaque blue/purple-colored 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa boasts an exceptional nose of creme de cassis, minerals, and spice. It takes at least a decade for wines such as this to begin to reveal more identity and vintage character. The cassis/blackberry liqueur-like fruit are present, as are mouthsearing levels of tannin and impressive extract. This blockbuster should be at its peak between 2010-2040.If Godzilla drank California Cabernet Sauvignon, would there be any doubt as to what choice it would be? Anyone who has regularly tasted Randy Dunn's Cabernet Sauvignons (first produced in 1979) realizes several things. They all possess the following characteristics: (1) remarkable color and richness, (2) massive personalities with huge tannic structures, (3) gorgeous purity and unreal aging potential..."

1996 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon 1500ml - $179.99

1997 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml - $79.99
Wine Advocate, Dec 2000, 92 points: "...The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa exhibits an opaque purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of pure cassis and blackberries with flinty notions in the background. Full-bodied, powerful, tannic, pure..."

1997 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon 1500ml - $179.99

1998 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml - $49.99
Stephen Tanzer, Nov 2001, 90 points: "Bright ruby-red. Aromas of cassis, licorice, graphite and game. Dense, supple and rich in extract; juicy flavors of cassis and licorice. Offers impressive texture for the vintage, but comes across as distinctly less sweet than the Howell Mountain bottling. Finishes with very good length and ripe, fairly substantial tannins that grew slightly dry with aeration."

1998 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon 1500ml - $109.99

Howell Mountain

1979 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 750ml - $399.99
Wine Spectator, Nov 1991, 94 points: "Sharply focused, with deep, rich, thick layers of fruit that echo plum, cassis and black currant. Firm but polished, it's mature and drinkable now but should hold up through the next decade with ease..."

1980 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 750ml - $179.99
Wine Spectator, Nov 1991, 95 points: "Massive, with inky color, this wine is jam-packed with ripe plum, currant and black cherry flavors and pretty spice and cinnamon aromas. Won't shortchange you on tannin either. Drinkable now but probably peaking in 1994. Drink 1993 to 2003.--Dunn vertical. (JL)"

1980 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 1500ml - $389.99

1980 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 5000ml - $1,299.99

1981 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 750ml - $149.99
Wine Advocate, Oct 1993, 90 points

1981 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 1500ml - $299.99

1981 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 5000ml - $1,099.99

1982 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 750ml - $179.99
Wine Advocate, Oct 1993, 95 points

1982 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 1500ml - $389.99

1982 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 5000ml - $1,299.99

1983 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 1500ml - $249.99
Wine Spectator, Nov 1991, 91 points: "Tart and earthy, also quite tannic, but loaded with tart currant, spice and cherry-tinged flavors. Tannic finish, too, but the fruit hangs in there. Drink 1994 to 2000.--Dunn vertical. (JL)"

1983 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 5000ml - $899.99

1984 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 750ml - $129.99
Wine Advocate, Aug 1994, 94 points

1984 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 1500ml - $279.99

1984 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 5000ml - $1,099.99

1985 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 750ml - $129.99
Wine Spectator, Jan 1996, 91 points: "Tight, firm and well structured, with compact, deeply concentrated currant, anise and floral flavors. The taut structure remains intact through the slightly dry, somewhat rustic finish, where it gains a wonderful complexity.--Cabernet Challenge. (JL)"

1985 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 5000ml - $1,099.99

1986 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 750ml - $149.99
Wine Advocate, Aug 1996, 95 points: "Two of the most impressive wines in these tastings, both of Dunn's 1986s tasted like 3-4-year old Cabernets rather than 10-year old adolescents. The opaque purple-colored 1986 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain offers awesome richness, mindboggling intensity, huge tannin, a massive mouthfeel, and a closed yet formidably long, well-endowed finish. This wine could be put in a tasting of 1994 California Cabernets and not stand out as a 10-year old wine. Give it another 5-7 years of cellaring and drink it over the subsequent 25-30 years ... amazing!"

1986 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 5000ml - $1,299.99

1987 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 750ml - $149.99
Wine Spectator, Dec 1997, 97 points: "A powerful, young wine, even at age 10. Dark, ripe, intense and deeply concentrated, this one is years from peaking. Packed with a rich, earthy core of currant, mineral, anise, sage and cedar. Quite tannic in this tasting, the fruit poured through on the finish..."

1987 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 1500ml - $339.99

1987 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 5000ml - $1,299.99

1988 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 750ml - $69.99
Wine Spectator, Nov 1998, 89 points: "Among the best in depth, richness, concentration, complexity and length. Classic Dunn Howell Mountain in its core of rich, earthy currant, mineral and raspberry. Finishes with chewy tannins, but also the fruit to match.--1988 California Cabernet retrospective. Drink now through 2008. 2,100 cases made. (JL)"

1988 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 5000ml - $649.99

1989 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 750ml - $69.99
Wine Spectator, Aug 1999, 92 points: "Dark and immense, still a youngster, with intense earthy currant, plum and black cherry flavors that are rich, yet for all their weight still quite elegant. Still has tannin to lose. Decant if you drink it now.--1989 California Cabernet retrospective. Best from 2000 through 2010. 1,800 cases made. –JL"

1989 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 1500ml - $159.99

1989 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 5000ml - $649.99

1990 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 750ml - $159.99
Wine Advocate, Oct 1993, 96 points: "The massive 1990 Howell Mountain exhibits huge tannin, but immense concentration. The richest Dunn Cabernet since the 1984s? Anticipated maturity: 1999-2020...It is slightly more tannic. It does possess a tell-tale mineral, cassis, flowery nose, and a rich, full-bodied, dense, highly extracted, tannic personality.""

1990 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 5000ml - $1,399.99

1991 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 750ml - $124.99
Wine Advocate, Dec 1994, 93 points: "The 1991 Howell Mountain Cabernet is noticeably thicker and more highly extracted than the 1992 and 1993 vintages. It is a huge, rich, powerful wine with great depth, as well as a boat-load of tannin. Do not touch a bottle for at least 5-6 years."

1991 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 5000ml - $1,099.99

1992 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 750ml - $159.99
Wine Advocate, Oct 1995, 97 points: "What makes the 1992 California Cabernet Sauvignon vintage so incredible is that one of its hallmarks is the voluptuous, opulent, and succulent nature of the fruit. In Dunn's offerings, that translates into wines that are massive and rich, but with sweeter, more expansive, chewy mid-palates..."

1992 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 1500ml - $369.99

1993 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 5000ml - $1099.99
Wine Advocate, Dec 1996, 95 points: "The 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain reveals an opaque black color, huge tannin, terrific purity, and density, a broad, heavyweight mouthfeel, and gobs of ripe tannin. It is a massive Cabernet Sauvignon that requires a decade of cellaring - at the minimum."

1994 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 5000ml - $1199.99
Wine Advocate, Dec 1997, 96 points: "The 1994s might be ready to drink within 10-15 years. It is hard to believe these wines spend 30 months in oak casks before bottling as they are incredibly unevolved and backward when released. Look out for the behemoth 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain. This black/purple-colored wine adds a few more nuances (minerals, licorice, and floral scents) to the lavish display of creme de cassis. Full-bodied, with a blockbuster level of extract and density, this is an outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon for readers with patience, good genes for longevity, or the foresight to purchase it for their children. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2030."

1996 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 750ml - $119.99
Wine Advocate, Jan 2000, 96 points: "...The 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain possesses a black/blue/purple color, and a texture of unctuosity and thickness. Greatness is suggested by a wonderfully sweet mid-section, gorgeous purity, and this humongous wine's overall symmetry. It also possesses sumptuous layers of concentration, remarkably sweet tannin, low acidity, and a 40+ second finish..."

1996 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 5000ml - $1,199.99

1997 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 750ml - $124.99
Wine Advocate, Dec 2000, 95 points: "...The enormous 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a super-powerful, fabulously-concentrated, 50-year wine. Aromas and flavors of blackberry/cassis jam, minerals, and subtle oak are found in this extravagantly rich, gargantuan Cabernet Sauvignon..."

1997 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 1500ml - $279.99

1997 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 5000ml - $1,199.99

1998 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 750ml - $59.99
Wine Advocate, Dec 2000, 90 - 92 points: "The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is one of the better wines from this cold climate region. Many 1998 Howell Mountain Cabernets are herbaceous and overtly vegetal. There is no trace of herbaceousness in the 1998 Dunn offering. The late harvest (between October 15-20), and the fact that over 40% of the crop was cut in order to obtain ripe fruit, explain this wine's success. Dense purple-colored, with aromas of blueberries, blackberries, cassis, and cold steel/mineral-like notes, this full-bodied, tannic, backward effort will need (even in this precocious vintage) 5-8 years of cellaring. Rather than a 50-year wine, it is a 25-30-year Cabernet..."

1998 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 1500ml - $134.99

1998 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 5000ml - $699.99

2001 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 5000ml - $799.99
Wine Advocate, Feb 2005, 93 points: "Ratcheting up the level of concentration and density, the saturated purple-hued 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain reveals a bouquet of acacia flowers, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. It is a full-bodied, intense, tannic, muscular, powerful effort that should be cellared for 5-10 years, and drunk over the following 20-25."

2002 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 5000ml - $749.99
Stephen Tanzer, Feb 2006, 93 points: "Bright, saturated ruby-red. Vibrant nose offers cassis, minerals, gunpowder and spices. Densely packed but nicely delineated, with primary, fruit-driven flavors of blackcurrant and spices. Very juicy and suave but still quite youthfully unevolved. Finishes with firm but smooth tannins. This calls for considerably more patience than the Napa Valley bottling, but even today there's a pleasing pliancy of texture. This held up extremely well in the recorked bottle."
