95 point Chateauneuf-du-Pape
2003 Roger Sabon Cuvee Prestige - $44.99 WS95
Produced from 90 year old vines, the Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Prestige' is Roger Sabon's top-of-the-line cuvee made from 60% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre, and 15% of other indigenous varietals. The old vines produce miniscule quantities of very high quality fruit which is then aged 12-18 months in French Oak.
Robert Parker calls the Roger Sabon estate "consistently one of the reference points for Chateauneuf-du-Pape" and says "this domaine has been on fire qualitatively."
Of the vintage, Robert Parker says "the 2003's performances puts them among the most successful wines of the appellation."
The Sabon family is one of the oldest land-holders in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, going back to 1540. Here the warm Mediterranean climate provides plenty of summer sun and the smooth river rocks (called galets) that cover the land keep the vineyard warm even during cool nights by storing heat during the day. The results are wines that are substantial, complex, and powerful with the ability to age 10-15 years.

Wine Spectator, Jan 2005, 95 points: "Dense raspberry, plum, licorice, tar and bacon notes are supported by thick, muscular tannins in this concentrated, showy red. A bit of a brute now (though floral and mineral hints chime in too) so cellar. If you do, you'll have a classic example of the vintage. Best from 2007 through 2025. 1,250 cases made. JM"
