Mollydooker - Just In

Mollydooker - Testament to Australia's greatness

Anyone who experienced the 2005 Mollydooker offerings knows that they are some of the best Australian wines on the market today, and if you have never had the fortune to taste them, now is a great time with the release of the new 2006 vintage. In fact, we had the opportunity to taste through their lineup back in June, and we absolutely loved them. In addition, Wine Spectator recently released their ratings for many of Mollydooker's 2006 releases, including Carnival of Love and Enchanted Path which both scored higher than the 2005s. We know how difficult it can be to follow up on such an amazing inaugural vintage (especially after Parker rated the Carnival of Love 99 points), but after tasting them we have no doubt that they are just as good if not better. These wines have a difficult time disappointing people, so go ahead, take a ride on the Carnival of Love and a stroll down the Enchanted Path and you will come away satisfied.

Justin Vineyards - Star of Paso Robles

Justin Vineyards - Paso Robles original

One of the most famous and loved wineries in California is Justin Vineyards, a family owned operation founded in 1981 in Paso Robles. When Justin and Deborah Baldwin moved in, there were less than 10 wineries in the area and most of them had yet to experiment with any of the Bordeaux varietals. Justin saw the potential and pioneered the use of varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot and developed an acute sense of the terroir in Paso Robles. The climate there is dramatically different from the rest of California's Central Coast, being much warmer due to the shielding of the Santa Lucia Range to the west. This helps to produce ripe Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. Justin has become the resident expert in Paso Robles at harnessing the unique Paso Robles terroir.

Their facilities are state-of-the-art (and the guest house is beautiful too) and their focus is on making Old World style wines using New World techniques. Both Robert Parker and Wine Spectator have consistently rated Justin wines highly, and they aren't always easy to find. Try any one of the offerings below and you won't be disappointed. Enjoy the long weekend!

2004 Justin Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml - $19.99
JJ Buckley, Aug 2007: "The dark core of this wine leads to only a slightly lighter rim. Aromas of plum, currant, and subtle spice emerge from the glass as the wine opens up. A hint of tobacco follows behind the fruit. Shows good concentration and depth in the mid-palate. Lots of plum and cedar shine through. Medium to long finish accented by fine tannins." - Alex Lallos, JJ Buckley

2005 Justin Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 375ml - $10.99
JJ Buckley, Aug 2007: "Spicy nose of plum and black fruit. The wine has a densely packed core of black cherry and black berry fruit and a touch of fine grained tannins that cleanse your palate with food. There is an excellent concentration of cherry fruit which balances the tannins and acid with a pleasing, persistent finish." - Andy Frieden, JJ Buckley

2005 Justin Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 1500ml - $44.99

2005 Justin Vineyard Justification Proprietary Blend 750ml - $34.99

2005 Justin Vineyard Savant Proprietary Blend 750ml - $34.99
JJ Buckley, Aug 2007: "Thick and dark purple in the core; bright red rim with a touch of garnet. Cool aromas present themselves up front: spicy black tea, blueberry, boysenberry, blackberry. A touch of new oak floats behind the fruit, accented by light violets and a hint of white pepper. Nice entry onto the palate – smooth and round. Sweet dark fruit flavors with spicy white and black pepper. Bold yet ripe tannins on the mid-palate, with a lush fruit, oaky finish." - Mike Supple, JJ Buckley

One of the true classics of Bordeaux

2002 La Mission & La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion

Across the street from Pessac-Leognan's only First Growth, Chateau Haut Brion, lies a sibling property called La Mission Haut Brion, a Chateau that utilizes the same first class vinification techniques as Haut Brion does and in many vintages even eclipses the quality of the First Growth. In fact, both Robert Parker and Wine Spectator believe that La Mission could be the wine of the 2006 vintage, giving it scores of 96-100 and 95-100 respectively. Hence, the wine sells for about $600 a bottle, which means, in other words, that $75 for this caliber of a label is unbelievable, even for an average year.

The soils and climate are virtually the same at both Haut Brion and La Mission, which has helped La Mission Haut Brion garner the consistently high ratings that it has. Its second label, La Chapelle de la Mission Haut Brion, also goes through the same vigorous wine-making process but comes from the younger vines which have not yet developed the maturity demanded by La Mission. Both selections are excellent representatives of the prestigious terroir of Graves, ready to drink now, and a great way to try a famous label at a very reasonable price.

FRANCE - BORDEAUX

2002 Mission Haut Brion, La Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $74.99
Wine Advocate, Apr 2005, 89 points: "This angularly-styled La Mission possesses hard tannin that may or may not dissipate over time. It exhibits a dark ruby color in addition to a sweet perfume of dusty, loamy soil notes interwoven with notions of white flowers, blueberries, black currants, and hints of toasty oak in the background. Medium-bodied and austere, it requires 2-4 years of bottle age, and should keep for 12-15. A small, 17-acre vineyard located near the classified Margaux estate of Giscours, Mille Roses merits a look by serious consumers."

2002 Chapelle de la Mission Haut Brion, La Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $29.99

Screaming Eagle

Screaming Eagle - Mixed Vintages

"You want to know what it takes to sell Screaming Eagle? It takes BRASS BALLS to sell Screaming Eagle." - adapted from Glenngary Glen Ross (1992)

In Stock

USA - CALIFORNIA

1992 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml - $7,999.99
Wine Advocate, Dec 1995, 99 points: "This small operation is located just below the Dalla Valle vineyard near the Oakville Cross. Screaming Eagle's Cabernet Sauvignons are going to create quite a stir among lovers of that varietal - if they are able to latch onto a bottle or two. The estate is owned by Tony Bowden and Jean Phillips, one of Napa Valley's leading real estate agents. With the help of Heidi Barrett and Gustav Dalla Valle, this operation's debut vintage is the extraordinary 1992 Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the greatest young Cabernets I have ever tasted. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered, and aged in 60% new oak. It is only sold via a mailing list, so readers who want to taste one of the most exciting young wines being produced should get on the list. The 175 cases of the 1992 are followed by only 130 cases of the 1993, and a tiny quantity of 1994, as the last two vintages were even smaller in crop size. At present, the 1992 can be bought at the following Napa Valley locations: the restaurants Don Giovanni and Brava, and at the St. Helena Wine Center and Oakville Grocery. Don't dilly-dally around on this one. The 1992 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon is exceptionally impressive. The wine's opaque purple color is followed by a sensational nose of jammy blackcurrants and subtle toasty oak. As stunning as the aromatics are, the wine reveals even greater richness and intensity on the palate, offering up layers of stunningly proportioned, ripe, intense fruit, full body, great purity, and an inner-core of sweet, creamy, highly extracted blackcurrant/cassis fruit. The tannin is nearly concealed behind the massive extract and richness. All the component parts are brilliantly focused and in balance. The finish is awesome! This is a spectacular debut release that should age effortlessly for 20 years. Screaming Eagle is one of the most exciting new wineries in California. Address: Screaming Eagle Winery and Vineyard, P.O. Box 134, Oakville, CA 94562; tel. (707) 944-0749"

1996 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml - $2,399.99
Wine Advocate, Jan 2000, 98 points: "...reveals lots of structure, an opaque purple color, and the hallmark blackberry and cassis liqueur-like notes. Silky-textured, fabulously-concentrated, and gorgeously-balanced, it has every component part - acidity, alcohol, tannin, and extract - flawlessly presented..."

1997 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml - $3,999.99
Wine Advocate, Jan 2000, 100 points: "It doesn't get any better than 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon, a perfect wine. Representing the essence of cassis liqueur intermixed with blackberries, minerals, licorice, and toast, this full-bodied, multi-dimensional classic is fabulous, with extraordinary purity, symmetry, and a finish that lasts for nearly a minute..."

1998 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml - $1,799.99
Wine Advocate, Dec 2000, 94 points: "...has turned out even better that I thought last year. It boasts a saturated ruby/purple color in addition to an expressive bouquet of cassis, minerals, and smoke. This multi-textured, round wine exhibits sweet, well-integrated tannin, a great mid-palate and finish, as well as spectacular purity and palate presence. Consume it now and over the next 15-20 years..."

1999 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml - $1,999.99
Wine Advocate, Aug 2002, 97 points: "...a gorgeously pure nose of creme de cassis, charcoal, and floral characteristics. The wine is opulent, dense, and rich, with exceptional purity, a viscous texture, and impressive underlying tannin that frames its large but elegant personality. Not surprisingly, this is a candidate for the wine of the vintage..."

2001 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml - $2,099.99
Wine Advocate, Feb 2005, 98 points: "...Dense purple-colored with a classic nose of black currant liqueur intermixed with licorice, a touch of earth, smoke, and discreet toast, this is a powerful, tannic, dense, young offering revealing Screaming Eagle's classic trademarks of fragrance, purity, nobility, and an extraordinary intensity of black currant fruit in a full-bodied, seamless style..."

2002 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml - $2,099.99
Wine Advocate, Feb 2005, 99 points: "...exhibiting a precociousness out of the gate, but capable of lasting 20-25 years. Deep purple-colored to the rim, with a gorgeously pure nose of creme de cassis with a hint of sweet cherry, licorice, and smoke, this wine is beautifully voluptuous, full-bodied, yet incredibly elegant, with a finish that goes on for close to a minute..."

2003 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml - $1,599.99
Wine Advocate, Dec 2005, 96 points: "The 2003 Screaming Eagle (84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc) exhibits the dramatic purity of creme de cassis fruit and freshness that have been hallmarks of this wine since its inception. The tannin is soft for a 2003, and the wine possesses gorgeous density and texture as well as a sweet mid-palate and a long, concentrated, harmonious finish. It is a brilliant Cabernet that should be at it best between 2007-2020+."

Highest rated Tignanello ever - $73.99

2004 Tignanello RP93 WS95 points - $73.99!

Yesterday we told you about one of the classic Super Tuscans, the 2004 Ornellaia, and today we are pleased to offer another 2004 from the famed Antinori family, Tignanello, in fact the highest rated vintage of this wine by Robert Parker and Wine Spectator ever. Tignanello represents the very beginning of the revolution in Italian wine-making, considered to be the first well-known wine to have broken the mold of Italian tradition, and succeeded.

Different from Ornellaia, Tignanello is actually made from a majority of Sangiovese grapes blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Less Bordeaux-like and more Italian in character, Tignanello is a classic Super Tuscan that doesn't cost like one. Availability of the highly-rated 2004 is limited, so don't miss out on the chance to experience another one of the greatest wines of Italy and the world.

Limited Availability

ITALY - TUSCANY

2004 Antinori, P Tignanello IGT Proprietary Blend 750ml - $73.99
Wine Advocate, Jan 2007, 93 points: "The 2004 Tignanello (85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc) presents a livelier shade of ruby along with fresher aromatics and flavors. Deeply expressive, it reveals black cherries, licorice, tar and sweet toasted oak on a linear, silky-textured frame of great class and elegance, showing outstanding presence on the palate and fine tannins to round out the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019."
Wine Spectator, Oct 2007, 95 points: "Offers aromas of blackberry, with hints of raisin and lots of spices. Full and velvety, with wonderful concentration and a long, rich finish. Very stylish and exciting. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best after 2012. -J.S."

Super Tuscan - RP95 points!

2004 Ornellaia - RP95 points

Tuscany is the quintessential Italian wine region, and Ornellaia is regarded as one of its premier producers. Known as a Super Tuscan, Ornellaia was introduced by Piero Antinori of the famous Antinori family in 1985 as part of a revolution in Italian wine-making. In an effort to increase the quality of wines coming out of Tuscany, producers began utilizing untraditional techniques not used in Tuscany before, most notably the omission of Sangiovese in the blending process. The wines exhibited exploding fruit with an amazing intensity that have consistently garnered high ratings. Ornellaia cemented the status of the new breed of Tuscan wines and set the standard for other producers to look up to.

There have been a few classic vintages in Tuscany, and 2004 is one of the recent ones. The weather was perfect in Bolgheri, the town in which Ornellaia is located, and the vintage is considered to be a great expression of Ornellaia's brilliance. Their wines are Bordeaux-like, blending a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon along with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Availability of the highly-rated 2004 is very limited, so don't miss out on the chance to experience one of the greatest wines of Italy and the world.

2004 Ornellaia, Tenuta dell' Ornellaia Proprietary Blend 750ml - $139.99
Wine Advocate, Jan 2007, 95 points: "The gorgeous 2004 Ornellaia is a great way to start this tasting. A lively dark ruby, it is a vibrant effort bursting with expressive aromatics and layered, well-delineated fruit, showing much purity on the palate and closing with a long, finessed finish. Readers hoping to catch this wine's full array of nuances will have to wait at least another few years as the wine remains quite primary today. This exquisite effort is not to be missed. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. 95/Anticipated maturity: 2011-2019. Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is without question one of Italy's blue-chip properties. The gorgeous, sprawling estate is located in Bolgheri in Tuscany's Maremma. On a recent visit I had the opportunity to taste a number of the estate's wines with General Manager/Agronomist Leonardo Raspini and Oenologist Axel Heinz, including verticals of the estate's top bottlings Ornellaia and Masseto.Ornellaia is a Bordeaux-inspired blend consisting principally of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. In 2003 a small percentage of Petit Verdot was introduced. The use of several varietals gives the winemaking team the luxury of being able to tailor the exact proportion of the blend to the specific strengths of a given vintage. Because the blend tends to vary from year to year in a vertical tasting Ornellaia shows many different facets of its personality. After harvest the varietals are vinified separately. Fermentation and maceration lasts between 25-30 days after which the wines are moved into French oak barrels where they age for 12 months. The wines are then racked and assembled into the final blend, which spends an additional six months in barrel prior to being bottled. The percentage of new oak has risen from 50%, which was used for vintages 1997 and 1998, to 60% used in 1999, to the 70% the estate has employed since 2000."

2000 Bordeaux for $10.99

2000 Clos les Lunelles - $17.99 or buy 6 or more and pay only $10.99 per bottle

2000 Clos les Lunelles 750ml - $17.99 (6 or more - $10.99)

One of our best sellers in Bordeaux is being reduced in price one more time. If you want to try a ready-to-drink Bordeaux from the terrific 2000 vintage at an unbelievable price, this is it. The average US retail price according to WineZap.com is $22. You save 50%! The deal doesn't come around often, so stock up!.

Clos les Lunelles is owned by Gerard Perse (also owns Pavie, Pavie-Decesse, Monbousquet, and Belleveu-Mondotte). However, we have been told that Perse only "finished" the 2000 vintage and that 2001 was actually the first vintage where he managed from start to finish. The 2000 is not a typical Perse wine and is in fact lighter in style. Although never rated by Robert Parker, he has scored every vintage since then 90 points or higher (92,90,92,92, 91-94, 92-94). Only 1,700 cases produced from this Cote de Castillon vineyard, made from 38-year-old Merlot (80%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (20%), planted on clay and limestone soils.

About Clos les Lunelles, Robert Parker has made such comments as: "Quickly becoming the reference point for wines of majestic richness and intensity from the Cotes de Castillon (a St.-Emilion satellite appellation that serious wine lovers should be checking out) ", "not surprising in view of the commitment to excellence exhibited by the Perses", "Although there have been a number of amazing offerings emerging from this appellation, this is a revelation", "If you can't afford the more renowned wines from Gerard Perse, check out this wonderful Cotes de Castillon."

If you're looking for a nice food wine with good acidity, medium body, along with classic Bordeaux flavors, then this is a must buy.

2000 Clos les Lunelles Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $17.99 (6 or more - $10.99)
JJ Buckley, Jul 2007: "Shows a light brick hue with a distinctly lighter rim. It offers an expansive nose of dried fruits, blackberry, fig. An understated aroma of stewed tomatoes arises with a little time in the glass. Ripe style with a lot of acidity and very light tannin. The midpalate is medium bodied with a woody undertone defined by cedar and spices. The strong finish lingers. Great food wine." - Alex Lallos, JJ Buckley

Alsace classic - Domaine Pierre Sparr

2002 Pierre Sparr knockouts

Among producers in Alsace, Pierre Sparr is one of the most prominent and established. They have helped define the region's classic, dry style wines that encourage aging. Established in 1785 and located in Sigolsheim in the heart of Alsace, the beautiful estate is comprised of 34 hectares including 3 Grand Crus.

Sparr wines are renowned for their ability to age, hence the proprietors often hold back certain wines from the market until they feel they are ready to drink. Sparr's reputation has been built on a distinct identity and style of fruit forward, complex, full bodied, and balanced wines. According to Wine Spectator, the 2002 vintage in Alsace made ripe, vibrant wines with high acidity and fine Reisling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris, especially Vendandes Tardives. We are pleased to offer three 2002 Pierre Sparr wines that we think display these characteristics exceptionally well at equally exceptional prices. Enjoy!

In Stock

FRANCE - ALSACE

2002 Pierre Sparr Gewurztraminer Mambourg Vendanges Tardives 750ml - $29.99 (reg. $39.99)
Wine Spectator, Oct 2005, 92 points: "The varietal character is unmistakable, yet this is elegant and though sweet, deftly balanced. Litchi, rose, spice and grapefruit mingle with the bright structure. It has a touch of grapefruit peel bitterness on the finish. Drink now through 2010. 550 cases made. –BS"

JJ Buckley, Aug 2007: "Visibly this wine is thick as indicated by its dark golden color. Lovely floral nose complimented by pear, peach, and Asian spice. Thick and rich mid-palate builds to a long spicy finish rounded out by generous fruit including golden apple, apricots, and pears. Vendanges Tardives performed very well in 2002, made obvious by this gorgeous wine." - Alex Lallos, JJ Buckley

2002 Sparr, Pierre Pinot Gris Mambourg Grand Cru 750ml - $19.99 (reg $27.99)
Wine Spectator, Oct 2005, 91 points: "Honey and vanilla tones grace this off-dry white, whose structure combines acidity and tannins. It's focused and also shows peach and quince flavors, with a long aftertaste. Try this with roast pork stuffed with nuts and fruit. Drink now through 2010. 450 cases made. (BS)"

JJ Buckley, Aug 2007: "Rich golden color in the glass, almost a bright bronze. Very nice white peach and floral aromas with a touch of white licorice over a good racy minerality. In the mouth, fruit flavors of yellow pear and white peach are surrounded by raw honeycomb and white licorice. There is a touch of alcohol on the mid-palate. Sweet on the finish, with lingering fruit and spice." - Mike Supple, JJ Buckley

2002 Sparr, Pierre Riesling Mambourg Grand Cru 750ml - $19.99 (reg $27.99)
Wine Spectator, Oct 2005, 91 points: "Fine balance here between the rich peach, apple and mineral flavors and vibrant structure. This is muscular and intense, with the potential to develop well over time. Firm, tight finish, with a mineral aftertaste. Needs food. Drink now through 2015. 400 cases made. –BS"

JJ Buckley, Aug 2007: "Medium yellow gold in the glass. Sweet petrol aromas up front over rich candied pear, apricot and citrus. There is a touch of floral notes behind the fruit and an edge of sweet honey. Very nice balance in the mouth; the acid and sugar levels compliment each other well. Medium-bodied. Sweet honeycomb, apricot and peach with a good flint backbone on the finish and a lingering jasmine note." - Mike Supple, JJ Buckley

2006 Ducru Beaucaillou - Contender for Wine of the Vintage

2006 Ducru Beaucaillou – the highest Parker-rated vintage out of barrel ever

When JJ Buckley traveled to Bordeaux in April to taste the 2006 vintage, there were a handful of wines that stood out above the rest, and one of them was 2006 Ducru Beaucaillou. In fact, we rated it higher than the 2005 vintage out of barrel. It was simply fantastic. This outcome can be attributed in part to the 25% of Merlot that was blended with the 75% Cabernet. Many of the famous Left Bank Chateaus were not as successful with their Merlot as Ducru and thus used a greater percentage of Cabernet, resulting in slightly austere, tannic and hollow wines. Ducru, on the other hand, is a seamless wine that combines power, richness, and a beautiful texture.

Accoring to Robert Parker, the 2006 Ducru Beaucaillou (along with 1996) is the highest rated vintage out of barrel...ever. Yes, it surpassed 2005, 2003, 2000, and 1995.

This is one of the wines of the vintage – do not miss it at this fantastic price (and don't miss the video either to find out why the 2006 Ducru Beaucaillou is a Nordic Bomb).

Arrives in 2009

2006 Ducru Beaucaillou Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $121.99
Wine Advocate, Jan 2007, 94 - 96 points: "Similar in style to the 1996, proprietor Bruno Borie continues to curtail yields, now producing just under 10,000 cases of the grand vin, and the rest of the production going into the increasingly high quality second wine, La Croix de Ducru Beaucaillou. The backward, tannic, dense purple-colored 2006 Ducru Beaucaillou offers sweet mineral-infused black cherry and cassis fruit interwoven with notions of graphite and truffles. Powerful, pure, rich, and intense, it should be at its peak between 2017-2035."

JJ Buckley, Apr 2007, 95 - 97 points: "Incredibly dark inky core surrounded by a bright fuchsia rim. On the nose rich blue fruits and sweet boysenberry are surrounded by butterscotch and a streak of cool minerality. Great power on the palate, front to back. Rich dark fruits are supported by a core of minerals and light metallics. Full and balanced, this is one of the wines of the vintage. 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot."

Wine Spectator, Apr 2007, 92 - 94 points: "Layered and rich, with lots of licorice and berry character. Turns to currants. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long finish. Very serious. Like it a lot. 1996 again. This is almost 95-100. —J.S."
