AUSTRALIA - SOUTH AUSTRALIA
2005 Kilikanoon Cabernet Sauvignon Killerman's Run 750ml - $19.99
JJ Buckley, Jul 2007: "Inky purple/black core. Dusty chocolate and violet aromas are underscored by green pepper. On the palate the green pepper is paired with asparagus over chewy tannins. Jammy on the finish."
2004 Kilikanoon Grenache / Shiraz Killerman's Run Proprietary Blend 750ml - $13.99
Wine Advocate, Oct 2006, 92 points: "This beauty reminded me of one of the Wine Advocate's great value picks from the late 1970s ... Chateau Souverain's 1974 Vintage Selection. Just as sexy and opulent, but made from a completely different blend, the 2004 Killerman's Run Shiraz/Grenache (60% of the former and 40% of the latter) comes from older vineyards in the Clare, Barossa, and Baroota valleys. This is a voluptuous Aussie red offering loads of cassis and black raspberry fruit along with small quantities of pepper and roasted Provencal herbs, and an opulent, full-throttle, beautifully pure, layered, impressively endowed style. Drink it over the next 3-4 years."
2005 Razor's Edge Shiraz Syrah 750ml - $8.99
Wine Spectator, Jul 2007, 90 points: "Smooth and round, with ripe plum, blackberryand dusky spice flavors that justdon't quit, lingering on the open-texturedfinish. Not a big wine, but flavorful andgraceful. Drink now through 2012.-H.S."
AUSTRALIA - NEW SOUTH WALES2001 Orion's Gate Chardonnay 750ml - $9.88
JJ Buckley, Jul 2007: "Pale golden color. Surprisingly fresh nose of hazelnut, toffee, citrus, and peach. Crisp and clean mouthfeel. Nice length. Culminates in a nutty yet fresh finish."
CHILE - MAIPO
2001 Viña Haras de Pirque Cabernet Sauvignon Elegance 750ml - $40.99
Wine Spectator, Jun 2005, 90 points: "Ripe and focused, with suave toast carrying the dark currant and blackberry as coffee, mineral and vanilla notes ripple underneath. Lengthy finish, too, with nice, latent concentration. Drink now through 2007. 1,200 cases made. -JM"
FRANCE - BORDEAUX
2004 Beaulieu Comtes de Tastes Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $13.99
Wine Advocate, Jun 2006, 87 - 88 points: "Made primarily from Merlot, the deep ruby/purple-tinged 2004 displays sweet, elegant notes of blueberries, black cherries, cedar, and spice box. Medium-bodied with surprising richness and purity as well as impressive equilibrium, this well-made Bordeaux Superieur can compete with some classified growths."
2000 Clos des Lunelles Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $17.99
JJ Buckley, Jul 2007: "Shows a light brick hue with a distinctly lighter rim. It offers an expansive nose of dried fruits, blackberry, fig. An understated aroma of stewed tomatoes arises with a little time in the glass. Ripe style with a lot of acidity and very light tannin. The midpalate is medium bodied with a woody undertone defined by cedar and spices. The strong finish lingers. Great food wine."
2000 Machorre Proprietary Blend 750ml - $12.99
JJ Buckley, Apr 2007: "A very dark, almost black core, is circled by a garnet and maroon rim. Warm milk chocolate aromas are followed by sweet tobacco, cedar and spicy vanilla over a core of rich, dark plum and black cherry. On the palate this wine is very well balanced, with soft and supple tannins. Coffee and bittersweet cocoa flavors are supported by dark cherry and plum with hints of nickel and a toasty oak finish."
2001 Marbuzet Bordeaux Blend 750ml - $27.99
Wine Spectator, Mar 2004, 88 points: "Plenty of violet, berry and vanilla in this red. Medium- to full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a licorice aftertaste. I like this as much as the 2000. Best after 2006."
FRANCE - BURGUNDY
2002 Faiveley Cote de Beaune Villages Pinot Noir 750ml - $19.99
JJ Buckley, Jul 2007: "The wine has an orange / ruby-rust color. Dried meats, nectarine, and fresh cherry dominate the nose, while a slight hint of menthol and spice add vibrancy. Surprisingly high in tannin for such a light colored wine. Loads of minerality. Subdued and tight with a tannic finish unexpected for its light-weight frame."
FRANCE - LANGUEDOC ROUSSILLON
2003 Angayrac, Domaine d' Costieres de Nimes Proprietary Blend 750ml - $7.99
JJ Buckley, Jul 2007: "Dark ruby color with slightly lighter rim. Crushed earth, asparagus, and sage show through the nose. Somewhat austere mid-palate. Old world in style, displaying good length, qualifying as a good food wine."
2003 Domaine du Mas Blanc (Dr Parce) Banyuls Rimage Cuvee la Coume Grenache 750ml - $41.99
JJ Buckley, Jul 2007: "Nice brick red color. Bold raisin and plum aromas with big floral notes. Light and playful on the palate with the candied violet and plum aromas coming in onto the tongue. Medium acidity with nice lingering fruit flavors."
FRANCE - RHONE
N.V. Cristia, Domaine de Cul de Sac Proprietary Blend 750ml - $9.99
JJ Buckley, Jul 2007: "This wine is a declassified Chateauneuf du Pape. What does that mean? Domaine de Cristia makes outstanding Chateauneuf every vintage. 2002 was not as strong a vintage, and rather than produce an inferior wine (like many other CDP producers did) they decided to age it and blend it with some of the outstanding 2003 vintage to give it more backbone. Thus, this is a high quality CDP from a top producer at a fraction of the price! Dark fruit aromas are accented by light floral hints and some scorched earth. In the mouth the wine is fresh and bright, with red cherry and notes of plum. Medium bodied with nice tannins, and a good streak of mineral under notes of baker's chocolate. A great drinking wine right now."
ITALY - SICILY
2003 La Planeta Merlot 750ml - $34.99
Wine Spectator, Apr 2006, 90 points: "Lovely raspberry, olive and vanilla aromas follow through to a full-bodied palate, with soft tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Delicious already. But wait. Best after 2006. 10,000 cases made. -JS"
ITALY - TRENTINO ALTO ADIGE
2006 Torre di Luna Pinot Grigio Pinot Gris 750ml - $8.99
JJ Buckley, Jul 2007: "This simple but pleasant white is very light in color and in body. It has a bright citrus nose and conjures delicate flavors of pear and melon. Crisp and refreshing, this is a perfect wine for a hot summer day."
ITALY - TUSCANY
2004 Avignonesi Rosso di Montelpulciano Sangiovese 750ml - $11.99
JJ Buckley, Jul 2007: "Dark red with hints of brown color. Roasted coffee and black licorice aromas followed by cherry, allspice, clove and black cherry. Bakers chocolate on the palate accented by black cherry notes. Medium bodied until the finish, where the tannins get very bold."
NEW ZEALAND - OTAGO
2006 Wild Rock Cupids Arrow Pinot Noir 750ml - $18.99
JJ Buckley, Jul 2007: "Nice dark maroon core with bright violet notes in the rim. On the nose it is very characteristic Pinot Noir. Fresh brambly red cherry aromas are supported by violet floral notes and hints of charcoal over sweet, spicy dark fruit. The wine enters the palate in a very soft and approachable style, bringing some bold acidity and nice fresh red fruits, leading to a spicy vanilla berry finish."
PORTUGAL - DOURO
2000 Ramos-Pinto Douro Duas Quintas Reserva Proprietary Blend 750ml - $31.99
Wine Spectator, May 2004, 92 points: "Essence of blackberry, black cherry and cassis define this deep-flavored red. This has a Portlike aroma and loads of smoke and spice notes, which fold into the rich, intense finish. Drink now through 2008. 400 cases imported. -KM"
SPAIN - YECLA
2004 Castano Hecula Proprietary Blend 750ml - $9.99
Wine Advocate, Feb 2007, 91 points: "The 2004 Hecula is a single vineyard selection of 100% Monastrell, 50% tank aged and 50% aged in French oak. It is slightly less ebullient but more serious than its younger sibling. Exhibiting aromas of toasty black fruits with milk chocolate in the background, this is a super-rich effort with terrific depth and concentration for its humble price. It is a remarkable value for drinking over the next few years."
2005 Castano Monastrell Mourvedre 750ml - $6.99
Wine Advocate, Jan 2007, 90 points: "The 2005 Monastrell is an insane value produced from three vineyard sites ranging in age from 40-60 years. Opaque purple-colored, it gives up fragrant aromas of blue fruits, plums, and prunes. Ripe, layered, and full-flavored, this hedonistic effort can be enjoyed now but will surely evolve for 2-3 years. Match it with beef and lamb."
USA - CALIFORNIA
2005 Conn Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Prologue 750ml - $21.99
JJ Buckley, Jul 2007: "This robust, mouth-coating blend has a nose of dark fruit and oak with flavors of plum, cherry and black currant briefly sneaking out from beneath a layer of rich tannins. The finish is long and spicy."
2000 Conn Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 750ml - $39.99
Wine Advocate, Dec 2003, 88 points: "The 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, from a tough vintage, is not as powerful as most examples. Nevertheless, it possesses a deep ruby/purple color as well as a sweet bouquet of damp earth, black currants, tobacco leaf, and saddle leather. Medium-bodied with supple tannin, and a surprisingly long finish, it may improve in the bottle, and prove to be unusually long lived for the vintage (12-15 years)."
2004 Cosentino Winery Merlot Legends 750ml - $19.99
JJ Buckley, Jul 2007: "This medium-bodied merlot has a candied nose with hints of blueberry and cherry. It is slightly sweet on the palate, exhibiting flavors of dark cherry and fresh plum. Boasts medium tannins. Spicy on the finish."
2001 Lorraine, Philippe Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml - $19.99
JJ Buckley, Jul 2007: "Thick, inky purple core with a brick rim. Light alcohol aromas over dark fruit with a hint of sawdust. Decent structure and fruit. Fairly complex, with a jammy finish."
2002 Pumari Riesling 750ml - $7.99
JJ Buckley, Jul 2007: "This medium-dry Riesling has a slightly nutty nose with a touch of earthiness. It is mildly sweet and also faintly nutty on the palate, with nice tropical flavors of pineapple and pear. The finish is slightly short but the wine is pleasurable."
2004 Rancho Zabaco Zinfandel Dancing Bull 750ml - $6.99
Wine Advocate, Dec 2006, 89 points: "Zinfandel is Rancho Zabaco Dancing Bull's main emphasis, and they make 60,000 cases of the Sonoma County Zinfandel, a delicious, realistically priced Zinfandel in 2004 that shows excellent berry fruit, plenty of pepper and spice, and a heady finish. Drink it over the next 2-3 years."
2006 Sbragia Family Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc 750ml - $16.99
JJ Buckley, Jul 2007: "This delightful and refreshing sauvignon blanc has floral and lemon notes on the nose and flavors of pear and melon. The finish is crisp and citrusy, with just a touch of creaminess."
